Buying in bulk, without a restaurant behind you
Households stocking up for the season, hostels and messes, office canteens, and anyone feeding a large family. Same rate as the restaurants, same 50 kg minimum.
Can a household buy potatoes at wholesale rate in Lahore?
Yes, from 50 kg upward. That is roughly two sacks, which a large family gets through in six to eight weeks if stored properly. Below 50 kg we are more expensive than your local sabzi wala once delivery is counted, and we will tell you so rather than take the order.
What 50 kg looks like
Two 20 kg mesh sacks and a 10 kg crate, or whatever combination you prefer. A family of six eating potato four times a week gets through roughly 6 to 8 kg a week, so a 50 kg order is around two months of cooking.
Storing it so it lasts
- Dark, dry, and between 8 and 12 degrees. A store room or the coolest corner of a garage.
- Off the floor, on a pallet or crate, so air moves underneath.
- Never beside onions. Onions give off moisture and gas that sprouts potatoes early.
- Not in the fridge. Below about 6 degrees the starch turns to sugar, and the potato fries dark and tastes sweet.
- Check the sack weekly and pull anything soft before it spreads.
